Item Description

The 'Year of the Pig' was celebrated in 1995 when this cover from the Channel Islands Nation of Jersey was serviced.  Jersey issued that year a pane of 9 'Greetings' stamps of which the highest denomination was a "characterised pig" single in a nod to the Lunar New Year and the zodiac sign of the Pig.

For somewhat inexplicable reasons, Jersey chose to illustrate a Jack-in-the-Box on its official first day cover for this issue.  That's why the confused pig, wearing the same outfit as the toy clown, is gesturing towards the Jack-in-the-Box and wondering what's going on!  The U.S. Year of the Pig stamp also franks this cover - which is as long as, but a bit wider than a #10 - and received its corresponding FDoI cancel.

The back of the envelope, which shows slight warping, has information on the Greetings issue from which this single comes, and is signed by the artist of the 'Confused Pig' . . . and shows that this is cover #2 of only 4 made!
