Cryptozoologists for decades have tried and failed to capture the legendary eel-duck, the Åland, sighted only rarely, but beloved by the citizens of Åland, the island nation between Sweden and Finland.

In 1996 Åland Post celebrated this unofficial national creature with a set of colorful Frama labels which quickly sold out. This FDC, with its handcolored cachet, was designed based on hard-to-find eyewitness accounts of the half-eel half-duck amphibious creature that has never been photographed.

The two Frama labels issued in the most-used denominations frank the cover, and received a nice strike of the official First Day of Issue pictorial cancel in the nation's capital of Mariehamn on September 6, 1996 showing an Åland in flight!

The reverse bears the Puffin Cachets logo and shows this to be cover #1 of only 13 serviced in Åland.
