Handwritten notation "Aus. 3" at top left. Historical Context A die proof represents one of the earliest impressions taken directly from the master die used to create the printing plates for a stamp. These proofs were meticulously inspected to ensure the quality of the engraving before mass production began. This proof is mounted on a presentation card from the Government Stamp Printing Works in Melbourne and bears the signature of John Ash, who served as the official Note and Stamp Printer for the Commonwealth of Australia during the period this stamp was produced.
