Item Description
Austria (Österreich), Scott #1469 (Michel #1982), used(o), 1990, Monasteries and Abbey Series, stamp shows the Trappist Cloisters at Engelszell Abbey, located near the town of Engelhartszell at der Donau in the northernmost area of upper Austria; abbey was founded in 1293 as a Cistercian monastery and was settled in 1295 by monks from nearby Wilhering Abbey, its mother house, over the years, the abbey experienced its ups and downs, closed during the Protestant reformation; but re-opened, then in 1746, Leopold Reichl, the last and greatest of Engelszell's abbots was appointed, and soon rebuilt its finances; between 1754 and 1764, Leopold built the present-day abbey church; however, in 1786, Engelszell was dissolved by the anti-clerical and rationalist Emperor Joseph II, and the buildings were subsequently put to secular uses, but then in 1925, Engelszell was occupied and re-founded, this time as a Trappist monastery by refugee German monks expelled after World War I from the Alsace; then in 1939, the abbey was confiscated by the Gestapo and the community of 73 were evicted; four monks were sent to Dachau while others were imprisoned elsewhere or drafted into the Wehrmacht; at the end of the war, only about a third of the previous community returned, however they were augmented by refugee German Trappists expelled from Bosnia; finally, in recent times, with a resident community of four monks, the abbey announced that it is "no longer able to maintain a Trappist life within the monastery", and the monastery was dissolved; black and brown, Scott 2019 catalog value: 25¢. Very slightly off-centered, light, quarter circular, black-inked, single-rimmed, socked-on-the-nose corner cancellation at the lower left and clear of the central image, back reveals a crease in the top left corner when viewed from the back, hence stamp is discounted, but crease only appears on the front when you look for it, good perforations; centering and image clear cancellation warrants a selling price premium, but crease calls for an adjustment, so a wash; inventory listing code: MF. This is not a 'bait-and-switch' offer. The stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.50 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.66 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
