The B&O Railroad refers to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, one of the oldest and most historically significant railroads in American history.Founding and Early History: Chartered in 1827 in Baltimore, Maryland One of the first common carrier railroads in the United States Construction began in 1828 with the ceremonial laying of the first stone by Charles Carroll, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence The famous race between the B&O's horse-drawn cars and the steam locomotive "Tom Thumb" occurred in 1830 Route and Expansion: Originally built to connect Baltimore to the Ohio River, hence "Baltimore and Ohio" Eventually extended west to St. Louis, Chicago, and other major cities Key route through the Appalachian Mountains, including the famous 17-mile crossing of the Allegheny Mountains Served as a vital transportation link between the East Coast and the expanding western territories Civil War Significance: Played a crucial role during the Civil War as a strategic transportation route Frequently targeted by Confederate forces trying to disrupt Union supply lines The railroad's president, John W.
