Battleship USS NEW YORK (BB-34) 1934 Ship Cancel Naval Covers w/ Byrd Antarctic Expedition Stamps Posted to North Bergen, New JerseyUSS New York (BB-34) was a United States Navy battleship that served from 1914 to 1948, notable for its role in both World Wars and as the first ship to carry 14-inch guns.The USS New York (BB-34) entered service in 1914 and was part of the Ninth Armored Division sent to reinforce the British Grand Fleet in the North Sea during World War I. At the start of World War II she joined the Neutrality Patrol and served as an escort for convoys to Iceland and Britain in the early stages of the war. The USS NEW YORK carried out its first combat against a coastal battery during Operation Torch near Casablanca, Morocco. Later in the war, she moved to the Pacific to provide fire support for the invasion of Iwo Jima and later Okinawa and then became a training and target ship.
