Item Description

    The Congo is located in Central to West Africa, and is famous for it's jungles (Tarzan) and wildlife. It was an independent Republic until 1908. A large majority was colonized by Belgium with other areas being formally colonized by the French early on and the Germans later. It was a Belgian colony until 1960 when it became independent once again and later adopted the name of Zaire. Other portions became Rwanda and Urundi. Congo is know for having the most beautifully engraved stamps of the continent and, some would say the world. Collecting this area will give one a sense of awe as you behold the beauty of the stamps which are a window into the era of European colonization and shifting boundaries during the 19th Century!     (The annotations on the back of some of these stamps are the perforation measurements and the individual position numbers when plating the sheet.)
