Item Description
Grade: UngradedBelgium Prince of Ligne 1914 Poster Stamps (2) Celebrating 100th Anniv Death Measure approx 1 7/8 x 2 3/4 - Mint never hingedFrom the web:Statue in memory of Prince Charles-Joseph de Ligne, made by Charles Brunin, 1882-1883.Located on the main square of Beloeil, an imposing statue pays tribute to Prince Charles-Joseph de Ligne (1735-1814). Military, diplomat, writer, Charles-Joseph Lamoral, Prince of Ligne, served several imperial and princely courts; he shone in the Parisian salons and, the writer published about thirty books, some devoted to the art of war, the others to the theater; novelist, autobiographer and memorialist, "this cosmopolitan prince" held his quarters in the prestigious royal residence he owned in Beloeil. It therefore seemed natural that this locality hosts in a central place a monument paying tribute to this illustrious character of the eighteenth century. At the initiative of the State, a statue was commissioned from Charles Brunin (1841-1887).Trained at the Academy of his hometown with Étienne Wauquière, the Montois Charles Brunin followed the sculpture courses of Joseph Geefs in Antwerp (1865-1868), before joining in Brussels the courses of Eugène Simonis. Although he did not win the Prix de Rome, he was helped by the city of Mons and made short stays in Italy (1871, 1873). Noticed at the various salons where he exhibited works of his inspiration, often busts "of the Italian popular type" which were very successful, he was appointed professor of sculpture at the Academy of Mons in 1875. It was around 1877-1878 that he was commissioned the statue of the Prince of Ligne. This is the first in a series of other public commissions; however, it will be more allegories that will be asked of him later. Renouncing his job in Mons (1882), to settle in Brussels closer to the public sponsors, Brunin was to die suddenly in 1887 while he was making the model of the Dolez monument for the city of Mons. The realization of the statue of the Prince of Ligne did not take place in the best conditions. As early as 1878, the artist had presented a model of his subject at a Salon in Brussels. In charge of validating Brunin's project, the Monuments Commission demanded a number of modifications that the artist did not accept; according to one expert, the prince's elegance was exaggerated and the overall appearance gave the impression that the prince was going to start dancing; a trial followed, it seems, before the Compagnie des Bronzes de Bruxelles finally proceeded to cast iron in 1882. The Charles de Ligne monument could be inaugurated. The statue depicts the spiritual writer standing, dressed in court costume, giving the impression of holding a pleasant conversation. On a square base, the statue sits in the center of the main square of the village of Beloeil. The pedestal bears the inscription:THE COMMUNE OF BELOEILto FIELD MARSHALCHARLES-EUGÈNE-LAMORAL,PRINCE OF LINE.MAY 3, 1735—DECEMBER 13, 1814Several tributes will be paid to this place, especially on the occasion of the centenary of the death of the prince: at the initiative of the Archaeological Circle of Ath and the region, on July 25, 26 and 27, 1914 ..., Ath and Beloeil host a prestigious event (Congress-exhibition, concerts, parade in front of the statue, nautical festival, reading of works, etc.) to which the Society of Friends of Walloon Art is associated. This is the last major cultural event in Wallonia before the Great War. I WILL COMBINE SHIPPING!!
