Item Description
Carefully selected from a vast collection, this original early 20th-century postcard is an exceptional piece for collectors, historians, and philatelists. Each postcard uniquely combines three key aspects that make it highly attractive:1️ philatelic:
This 1919 postcard was sent from BRUGES, BELGIUM to MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY, featuring a prominent MILITARY CACHET OF THE 6E RÉGIMENT DE CHASSEURS À PIED – ÉTAT-MAJOR in violet ink. As common with OFFICIAL POST-WAR MILITARY CORRESPONDENCE, there is no adhesive stamp. The free-franking privilege is confirmed by the regimental marking. Mail from Belgium to Uruguay under military franking is particularly uncommon.
2️ Aesthetic:
The front features a colored view of PLACE LÉOPOLD I IN OSTEND, showing the equestrian statue of KING LEOPOLD I, the first monarch of Belgium after its independence in 1830. The scene is framed by elegant FIN-DE-SIÈCLE BELGIAN ARCHITECTURE, including a boucherie and the façade of Hôtel de Londres, evoking the bourgeois character of early 20th-century Ostend.
3️ Social:
The message, dated 11 MAY 1919, is written in French and addresses a Uruguayan couple. It reads:
_"This view shows the statue of Belgium’s first king after its independence in 1830 (Leopold I). I hope this card finds you in good health and brings you joy."_
The sender signs as J. LESQUIERS, with a tone of warmth and diplomacy, possibly reflecting a personal or diplomatic link during the postwar period.
This outstanding combination of POST-WAR MILITARY HISTORY, ROYAL ICONOGRAPHY, AND TRANSATLANTIC CONNECTION makes it a valuable addition to any OPEN CLASS EXHIBIT, especially those focused on WWI AFTERMATH, BELGIUM–LATIN AMERICA RELATIONS, OR MILITARY POSTAL HISTORY.
