Item Description
Carefully selected from a vast collection, this original early 20th-century postcard is an exceptional piece for collectors, historians, and philatelists. Each postcard uniquely combines three key aspects that make it highly attractive:1️ Philatelic: This 1919 military postcard was sent from Belgium to Montevideo, Uruguay, bearing a violet cachet of the 6e Régiment de Chasseurs à Pied – État-Major (6th Regiment of Infantry – Headquarters). No adhesive stamp is present, as was common for official military correspondence. This postcard represents a post-WWI military free-franking item, validated with regimental marking — a rarity on mail to South America.
2️ Aesthetic: The front image captures the return of Mayor Adolphe Max to Brussels on November 17th, 1918, following the city’s liberation by Allied forces. The dignified composition shows the mayor in an open car in front of ornate wrought-iron architecture, adding symbolic and visual strength to the patriotic moment. Photograph by S. Polak, Bruxelles.
3️ Social: The handwritten message (in Spanish) reads: "El 15 abril 1919. Recuerdo del momento de la apertura triunfal del regreso de los ejércitos aliados en Bruselas el 17 noviembre 1918. Su hermano Alejandro." This is not just a personal memento but a commemorative record of the end of WWI and liberation of Belgium, reinforcing the social and historical impact of the event.
This rare combination of wartime postal history, iconic imagery, and personal testimony makes it an excellent piece for Open Class exhibits and thematic collections involving WWI, liberation of Belgium, or military censorship.
