Item Description

VARIETY - JAPANESE LANGUAGE OVERPRINT instead of normal English language.  

US Scott catalog notes this set exists and assigns a value of US$125.00 

This was an unexpected issue of Bhutanese stamps first sold at the exhibition in Japan.  Japanese contract printer surprised the Bhutan PO at the Fukuoka exhibition by unexpectedly delivering overprints in both languages to the Bhutan post office booth at the show.  It was not initially noticed by Bhutan postal officials at the exhibition sales booth that two different sets were being sold there.

After the show, remaining unsold stock was sent on to Bhutan, where the Japanese version was placed on sale alongside the English language version. (Also available - please inquire if interested).  

Printers sheets exist (2 post office panes of 20 stamps divided by a vertical gutter), with the left pane only showing a sheet serial number in its upper left corner.  (Gutter pairs and blocks available.  Price on request.)  

No press notice of the availability of two different sets was issued to the philatelic world.  To date, no specialist collector of Bhutan stamps has found a complete set of the Japanese version on a FDC. Covers were prepared and postmarked in Fukuoka, but all FDCs thus far seen have only some English and some values in Japanese affixed.
