Item Description
British Overseas Territories. A postal envelope known as the "First Day Cover" dedicated to Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin. The envelope was issued in Anguilla on 23 April 1979.
The envelope features a portrait of Count Zeppelin and his airship "Graf Zeppelin".
The postage stamp has a face value of 35 cents and is covered by a 2 Reichsmark additional stamp dedicated to German airmail. The text below Zeppelin's portrait reads: "Driven by dreams of flight, Count Zeppelin created the airship for his beloved Germany". The text on the back describes the history of Ferdinand von Zeppelin and his airships. He designed the world's first rigid airships, inspired by an article about airmail and airship travel, as well as the success of the French airship "La France". His initial proposal for an "air express train" was rejected by the German government as impractical. However, the airship depicted on the envelope, Count Zeppelin's LZ 127, entered service in 1928 and served Germany until 1940.
