This is a 1933 commemorative cachet celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge.Design Elements: Illustrated view of the Brooklyn Bridge spanning the East River in turquoise/teal ink Shows the bridge's iconic Gothic Revival stone towers and suspension cables Includes ships in the harbor beneath the bridge Text reading "50th ANNIVERSARY OF BROOKLYN BRIDGE" "1883 - 1933" marking the anniversary dates "OPENED MAY 24th 1883" on the right side "BUILT BY JOHN A. ROEBLING" credited at the bottom Historical Significance: The Brooklyn Bridge was a marvel of 19th-century engineering, designed by John Augustus Roebling (though he died during the early planning stages, and the project was completed by his son Washington Roebling and daughter-in-law Emily Warren Roebling). When it opened in 1883, it was the world's longest suspension bridge.Postal Details: Postmarked from Brooklyn, N.Y. on "MAY 24 1933" at "12:30 PM" - exactly 50 years after the bridge's opening Features a 3-cent purple commemorative stamp Addressed to "Viola S. Tatum, 69 Saratoga Avenue, Yonkers, New York" This cachet commemorates one of America's most famous landmarks on its golden anniversary. The Brooklyn Bridge was revolutionary for its time, being the first steel-wire suspension bridge and connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn when Brooklyn was still a separate city (it wouldn't become part of New York City until 1898).
