Item Description

Used, on paper.  Nice full date, but blurry, cancel BRUNEI 4 AUG 1896 (?). See photo of back.
Scott #A2, catalog value $17.50.   Stanley Gibbons #2, catalog value €15.00 in 2010 (when the pound was worth a lot more).
The 1895 Star and Crescent issue is often considered a local, as it was not valid for postage outside of Brunei.  Long recognized by Stanley Gibbons, Scott now lists it in its "Classic" catalog.  A 1973 booklet by famous philatelist Robson Lowe (3rd photo) states that "erroneously, these stamps have been called "locals", but the Star & Crescent stamps are the first general issue of the Brunei Post Office"
