Item Description

This cover measures about 5½ by 3 inches. The stamp is Scott number 220. The Chamness, Indiana, circular date stamp has a double ring and the postmark date is January 21, 1895. A partial Winchester, Indiana, receiving postmark is on the back along with pencil notations. The numerals on the front are in pencil as well.

The envelope was cut open at the right end and has soiling. The envelope contained one of several letters that Julia and her sister, Susannah, received and saved at Winchester, Indiana. The letters were all removed from the covers many years ago and archived at a research institution for Cox family genealogy research.
