Item Description
The theme for the EUROPA stamps of 2002 was "National Circuses", and Iceland went under the Big Top with two designs that feature a clown, 2 trapeze artists, a trained lion . . and a disembodied ventriloquist dummy head??The handcolored cachet depicts the Puffin Cachets mascot in clown garb, unicycling while skillfully brandishing the dummy head!
The word 'Hringleikahús' over the puffin clown's head formally means 'amphitheater', but it showed up in all my research done on Icelandic circuses. Its use may be similar to our "Under the Big Top" phrase.
The cover received two nice strikes of the May 16, 2002 official First Day of Issue cancel from Reykjavík, Iceland featuring the same clown head seen on the 60 kronur single. The reverse shows that this is cover #2 of only 10 made.
