Item Description
Denmark (Danmark), Scott #698 (Facit #768), used(o), 1981, History of Danish Aviation Issue, stamp shows the Bellanca J-300 "Liberty" airplane of the flight of Holger Hoiriis (Højriis) (1901-1942) and Otto Hillig (1874-1954), Hoiriis was the first Dane to make a Transatlantic Flight; on 24 June 1931, the Hoiriis and Hillig took off from Newfoundland in their red and silver-white Bellanca Pacemaker J-300, with the name Liberty painted on the side of the plane; Liberty was the name of the small town in New York state where German-born Hillig lived and had earned his money; flying through fog, they made landfall in Spain, and flew north, touching ground twice in Germany for brief rests, and finally landed at Kastrup Airport in Denmark, where they were met by 50,000 people, including Hoiriis's mother, and two of Hillig's friends from Liberty, New York; there were parades and medals as well as a large banquet at the City Hall; 1.60 krone, perforated 12¾, steel recessed engraved by Czeslaw Slania (1921-2005), Polish-born postage stamp and banknote engraver; resident of Sweden from 1956; one of the most skilled and prolific of all stamp engravers with over 1,000 stamps to his credit; official Royal Court Engraver of Sweden since 1972; his work was of such recognized quality and detail that he is one of the very few readily named engravers among stamp collectors, with some who specialize in collecting his work, Scott 2019 catalogue value: 30¢. Nicely centered, light, broken-up, black-inked, double-rimmed, quarter circular, socked-on-the-nose corner cancellation at lower left and well clear of the central image, sound back, front cancellations just shows through on back, good perforations; centering and image free cancel warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch' offer; the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.45 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.63 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
