Item Description
Grade: VF (Very Fine)Stampless Folded Letter from Dover, NH to Providence, RI. Cancelled Apr 30th. The dateline inside reads "Madbury, Apr 30th 1847". The letter is from Elijiah Austin to Wingate Hayes and it starts out 'Dear Son'. With different last names, one would assume Wingate married one of Elijiah's daughters, but genealogic records don't support this. Instead, we see in census records that Austin family members in Madbury also lived with Hayes family members. So it is probable that Elijiah took in Wingate and his siblings perhaps after a parent died. In any event, a neat piece of postal history and perhaps of interest to anyone doing Austin and Hayes genealogy.
