Published in 1971, this reference unquestionably in high demand for collectors. The "Fundamentals of Philately," written by the stamp collecting brothers Leon Norman Williams and Maurice Williams, was first serialized and then was published twice by the American Philatelic Society. This is the first edition published in 1971 (the second printing occurred in 1990). It is 629 pages -- before the appendix, and is really a graduate level course on all the things a stamp collector needs to know about stamp design, stamp paper and printing. A hard-bound book, it is likely a must-have for collectors alike as a philatelic reference.
The Williams brothers devote a lot of literary pages to the kinds of paper which have been used to produce stamps, which knowing can actually help philatelists gain insights into faults and how to determine them. There is also a great amount of information dedicated to the physical printing methods and the subsequent impact on stamp designs. And, just to be thorough, the book addresses evaluating perforations s well as gum.
Just a final footnote, the serialized third edition (all four paperbacks) is currently at auction within this store.
