Stationery palestine type 2 customs control seal cover '44 click images to enlarge description great britain higgins & gage #47 or 48 variety (the backflap is sealed making it difficult to make a determination) registered letter stationery entire tied by indistinct march 14, 1944 cannon station cds, sent to tel-aviv, palestine opened there for customs inspection and closed with type 2 seal. This is the only reported overseas use of any of the customs and currency control seals! This is also the earliest known usage reported for the type 2 seal! (type 2, imprint 'g. R.', crown george vi -2, perf: hh8, text: "general post office" white paper eku 4/23/1944) unlike many countries, where the same seal was used in many roles such as repair, closing mail found open, customs inspection or used in the dlo, great britain created seals with different designs for each task. Seals specifically designated for the closure of mail after customs inspection have been used since 1941. Like the repair seals and tapes, these seals had the initials of the monarch and a crown as major design elements for the first 40 years of their use. The modern seals and tapes are more streamlined. Sent 1949, beautiful as is condition. (seals / tapes by definition were used to repair damaged mail caused by a wide variety of conditions and found in a wide range of condition.) this cover appeared in the exhibit of the late jim kotanchik's gold medal award winning exhibit, "official seals of great britain" the exhibit was probably last shown at westpex in 2009. It is possible that some of the information contained therein is no longer current. Jim kotanchik was a highly regarded expert in worldwide seals.
