Item Description

This cover measures about 5½ by 3 inches. The stamp is Scott number 220. The Fairmount, Indiana, postmark date is June 20, 1892, and the obliterator was probably a round carved cork design. A partial Winchester, Indiana, receiving postmark is on the back along with a penciled notation regarding the date of a response to the letter. The year of the postmark is penciled on the front of the cover.

The envelope was cut open at the left end and there is light paper staining in the vicinity of the stamp and CDS and a stain along the top at the center. The envelope contained one of several letters that Julia and her sister, Susannah, received and saved at Winchester, Indiana. The letters were all removed from the covers many years ago and archived at a research institution for Cox family genealogy research.
