Gilbert Stuart was an American painter who was one of the great portrait painters of his era and the creator of a distinctively American portrait style. Born December 3, 1755, in Saunderstown, Rhode Island colony (now in North Kingstown, Rhode Island), and died July 9, 1828, in Boston, Massachusetts. Background and Training: Stuart grew up in Newport, Rhode Island, where he learned the rudiments of painting. In 1775 he went to London and entered the studio of the expatriate American artist Benjamin West, with whom he worked for about six years. His mature style owes more, however, to the work of Thomas Gainsborough. Most Famous Work: His best known work, the unfinished portrait of George Washington that is sometimes referred to as The Athenaeum, was begun in 1796 and left incomplete at the time of Stuart's death in 1828. The image of George Washington featured in the painting has appeared on the United States one-dollar bill for over one century.Career Achievement: Gilbert Stuart is widely considered to be one of America's foremost portraitists and was one of America's first great portraitists and painted the new republic's first six presidents, as well as many other important public figures. Throughout his career, Gilbert Stuart produced portraits of over 1,000 people.Artistic Skill: Stuart knew well the conventions of portraiture, easily rendered the attributes of gentility and affluence, and succeeded time and again in executing portraits that fulfilled in pictorial terms the wishes and desires of his sitters. Stuart's portrait of George Washington is one of the most recognizable images in American history, appearing on currency and establishing the iconic image of the first president that Americans know today.
