Item Description
There is a surprising diversity of insect life on the remote Faroes Islands, and among the more interesting are the varieties of tiny LEAFHOPPERS. Four of the species known in the Faroes (from about 20) are shown on the 4 nicely-designed (as long as you aren't squeamish about bugs!) stamps in the set . . . which are a minuscule subset of the over 20,000 species of Leafhoppers known worldwide!On this handcolored cachet, 2 Leafhoppers admire the Faroese Flag that their cousin has somehow managed to apply to his carapace! The envelope is handmade from a 'deep khaki' linen writing paper. The four stamps in the set are nicely tied by a beautifully-centered official pictorial First Day of Issue cancel that depicts a Leafhopper, and which was applied in The Faroes capital of Tórshavn on Feb. 6, 1995.
The reverse has the rubber-stamped Puffin Cachets logo and is designated as an 'Artist's Proof', meaning I was still experimenting with color schemes! I think about 8 of these covers were sent to The Faroes for servicing.
