This is a 1933 commemorative envelope featuring the first apothecary shop in America.Illustration: A detailed colored drawing shows a colonial-era stone building with a steep roof, multiple windows, chimneys, and what appears to be attached smaller structures. The building is set against green trees and appears to be built of light-colored stone or wood with a reddish-brown roof.Title: "The First Apothecary Shop in America" appears below the illustration.Historical description: The text explains that the building was completed in June 1752 and opened on July 10th, 1752. It details that medicines were made from herbs grown in the gardens and gathered from surrounding fields and woods. Dr. John Matthew Otto, who had a doctor's degree in medicine from Halle, was the first physician and surgeon. The building has been used as an apothecary shop since its opening down to the present day.Date and location: "Bethlehem, Penna. July 19th, 1933" appears at the bottom of the description.Postmark: A purple circular postmark from Bethlehem, Moravia dated "JUL 10 1933" at "10 AM"Stamp: A 3-cent purple commemorative stamp showing what appears to be a building or architectural scene, likely related to the Century of Progress exhibition (1833-1933 visible on the stamp).Addressing: The envelope is addressed in red text to "F.C.Kenworthey, Lane Hotel, N.Side, Pittsburgh, Pa." This cover commemorates the historic Moravian apothecary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, highlighting early American medical history.
