Historical Context Following the invasion of Yugoslavia by Axis forces in April 1941, Italy occupied a significant portion of its territory. The Italians established a specific military occupation zone known as the "Zona Occupata Fiumano-Kupa" (Occupied Zone of Fiume-Kupa). For postal purposes within this zone, Italian authorities overprinted existing stocks of Yugoslavian definitive stamps featuring King Peter II. The overprint "ZONA OCCUPATA FIUMANO KUPA" designated these stamps for use in the territory, which included the city of Fiume (Rijeka) and surrounding areas bordered by the Kupa river.
