"CD" logo in a diamond on the lower right. Publisher: Editions C.D., 21, rue Bobillot, Paris XIIIe. "MEXICHROME COULEURS NATURELLES". Printed text on reverse: "LES CHATEAUX DE LA LOIRE / CHAUMONT (Loir-et-Cher) / 2 - Façade sur le Parc". Postmark: Dispatch Postmark: Location: SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE Date: AUGUST 10, 1959 (10-8 1959). Time: 16-45 (4:45 PM). Cachet / Slogan Cancel: Large rectangular black cachet applied over the message area and partially on the stamp: "PAR L'ARMEE / VOUS AUREZ / UN METIER EN MAIN". Translation: "By the Army / You will have / A trade in hand". This was a French Army recruitment slogan. Address: From: Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, France (per postmark). Sender signed "The Mottens". To: George Leedom, 11 Courtney St, Newark, Delaware, U.S.A. Message (handwritten in English): Transcription: "Dear George, Here is a complete one with moats, drawbridges, and donjons. We went into this one and several like it. Love The Mottens" Travel: From: Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, France. To: Newark, Delaware, USA. Dispatch Date: August 10, 1959. Mode of Transport: The 30F rate in August 1959 would have covered the surface mail postcard rate to the USA (which was 25F), with a slight overpayment. Approximate Travel Distance: Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine (suburb of Paris) to Newark, DE is roughly 6,000-6,200 km (approx. 3,700-3,850 miles). Historical Context for Postmark Date (August 10, 1959): Fifth Republic: France was in the early period of the Fifth Republic under President Charles de Gaulle. Old Franc Currency: The "old franc" was still the currency in use. The "New Franc" (1 New Franc = 100 old francs) would be officially introduced on January 1, 1960. Algerian War: The Algerian War of Independence was ongoing, a major concern for France. Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine: A commune in the northern suburbs of Paris, known for its large flea market (Marché aux Puces). This postcard is an interesting example of tourist mail from France to the USA in 1959, featuring a French Army recruitment slogan cachet and a correctly rated (though slightly overpaid and applied upside down) 30 Francs stamp.
