Item Description

France, Scott#4412, used (o), 2013, Marianne of Ciappa and Kawena, stamp shows a youthful Marianne with upraised hand and the traditional Phrygian Cap that is a symbol of the revolution, stamp also shows two small children playing catch (Marianne et La jeunesse); since the start of the Fifth Republic in 1958, it has become the practice to allow each incoming French president to choose the design of the Marianne stamp to be used for the remainder of the president's time in office; after his election in 2012, President Françoise Hollande decided that Marianne would represent youth; forty artists competed, from these 15 were selected to be shown to students from 30 high schools to select the top three; Hollande was free to choose from among the three; he selected the one with the most votes; the stamps were engraved by Elsa Catelin of the French state printers; the designers' and the engraver's names are on the stamp, David Kawena and Oliver Clappa; 5 centimes, dark brown, Scott 2019 catalog value: 25¢. Nicely centered, light circular border cancellations at right side and clear of the central image, sound back, good perforations. This is not a 'bait-and-switch' offer. The stamp you see will be the stamp you get.
