Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) was the 32nd President of the United States. Born on January 30, 1882, on a large estate near the village of Hyde Park, New York, he came from a wealthy family and was the son of James Roosevelt and Sara Delano Roosevelt.Roosevelt assumed the presidency at the depth of the Great Depression (1933-1945) and became a transformative U.S. president during the Great Depression and World War II, who implemented groundbreaking policies that reshaped America's economy. FDR served an unprecedented four terms in office, making him the only American president in history to be elected four times.Key aspects of his presidency included:The New Deal: FDR greatly expanded the powers of the federal government through a series of programs and reforms known as the New Deal, which reinvented the role of government in Americans' lives.Personal challenges: Stricken with polio in 1921, Roosevelt spent much of his adult life in a wheelchair.Historical impact: A whole generation of Americans grew up knowing no other president, and he helped the American people regain faith in themselves during one of the nation's most challenging periods.Death in office: Roosevelt died in office in April 1945, during his fourth term. Roosevelt's presidency fundamentally changed the relationship between the federal government and American citizens, establishing many social programs and leading the country through both the Great Depression and World War II.
