GB 1917 very rare cover from the sinking of the P. & O. Liner "MONGOLIA" that hit a German mine and sunk on June 23, 1917. Used from London on 31 May, 1917, sent to David Ezra at Calcutta, India. Bombay arrival cancel dated 26 June 1917 with very rare purple marking "ACCIDENT AT SEA / MONGOLIA / 23.6 17." According to Hopkins (A History of Wreck Covers) only four covers are recorded from this wreck. Stamp floated off envelope while submerged off the coast of India. (Wreck covers from three ships, the Hesperian, Leinster and Mongolia are the only casualties of WWI where the ship's name is shown on the salvaged mail.)        E328
