OUTSTANDING USAGE in first month of issue! LOVELY EXAMPLE of the early BLUED PAPER issue in the subtle rosy shade. VERY CLEARLY DATED 15th July confirming SG.176. No hidden faults. Note this early MILITARY CAMP postmark is associated with SHOOTING EVENTS later held at the famous BISLEY Rifle Range**(see note below). AN EXHIBITION QUALITY RARITY. Extremely Fine for an item of this type & period. Please look at all the scans to help form your own opinion.
Please note**: The National Rifle Association Imperial Meeting was held in July on Wimbledon Common from 1860 to 1889. By the late 1880s the rifles and ammunition had become more powerful, hence the move to Bisley Common in 1890, where the meeting has been held ever since. Wimbledon Camp had various ranges set up together with other facilities in an area adjacent to the windmill. Much accommodation for those staying in the camp was under canvas, but there were a number of timber-built and portable buildings erected each year for the meeting, then dismantled and stored until the meeting the following year. In 1890 some of these wooden buildings were erected at Bisley, but as the venue was a permanent range, they did not need to be taken down again. The largest of these was the Pavilion, which did not get demolished and replaced until around the 1930s. Others of these buildings are still at Bisley and in use.
One of the facilities of both Wimbledon and Bisley was a temporary post and telegraph office for the duration of the meeting.
