Read more about the seller notes NOTE this is a *PROOF* for the better known 1879 TENDER ESSAYS that were produced with SE-TENANT DESIGNS & LETTERS "W" IN ALL FOUR CORNERS by Perkins Bacon. This PROOF pair has both values of ONE PENNY & NO LETTERS in the four corners. IMPORTANT EXHIBITION ITEM. Believed to be a reference for the then current standard LAKE RED shade of the Penny Red Plates produced by Line-Engraved process, but produced by Surface-printing. . We have not seen these in this colour previously. Some tone spots on one unit but overall Very Fine for an item of this type & period. NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH LATER 20th Century REPRINTS on bright white paper. Please look at all the scans to help form your own opinion. IMPORTANT as a pair that shows two of the same design together & not se-tenant designs as produced as Essays. Priced & sold with all faults considered (WAF).
