Beginning in April 1864, the 'HUFEISENSTEMPEL' or 'HORSESHOE CANCEL' began to be used in some towns in the North German Confederation, and by 1871, was in use in some cities and towns in Germany. By the time the use of this cancellation type ended, a total of 41 different towns or cities had utilized some form of the design. Within specific towns/cities, there were a number of variations as well. For example, the city of Hamburg used no less than 24 variations of the cancel! These variations range from star designs in the ends of the horseshoe to circles, from use of just the town name to the addition of special offices; to actual shape of the horseshoe designs. The cancels were applied to letters and cards which originated in, terminated in, or transited the specific town or city. The cancels exist in various shades of blue, gray, and black. The last documented use of this type of cancel was in Strassburg in early 1900. Examples of this late usage are extremely rare.Picture show the actual item. Please contact with any questions.
