Item Description
The item in this listing is a single mint, hinged postage stamp issued for use in the German crown colony of German New Guinea ("Deutsch Neu Guinea") in 1900. This stamp is postally used, and is listed in Scott as #23, and has a face value of 5 marks. As is typical for German colonial issues, the stamp shows the Kaiser’s yacht, SMS “Hohenzollern”.Scott #23 was issued in Germany during the First World War. Germany kept printing colonial stamps in the belief that they would be needed once the war ended and allied occupations of German colonies ended. As the colonies were never returned to Germany, this stamp and others from the war-time printings were never actually issued in the colonies nor used for postal purposes.
In the German Michel catalogue, this stamp is listed as #23 II B I, which has a "type 2" vignette. This was technically an error, as the type 2 vignette was intended for use with the "Type 1 frame"--only for colonies with shorter names like Togo or Samoa. This appears as two small white "bites" into the cloud layer under "UT" of "DEUTSCH" and under "NE" of "NEUGUINEA". Michel CV 40 euros (=$44)
The German New Guinea colony was the northern half of the nation now known as Papua New Guinea, and was colonised by Germany starting in 1884. It included many of the islands off this coast of PNG. The colony was invaded by UK and Australian forces during the opening months of the First World War and was conquered within a few weeks. Germany never regained control of this or any of her colonies after the Treaty of Versailles ended the war.
