Item Description

The item in this listing is a single used postage stamp issued for use in the German crown colony of German New Guinea ("Deutsch Neu Guinea") in 1900.  This stamp is postally used, and is listed in Scott as #9, and has a face value of 10 pfennig.  As is typical for German colonial issues, the stamp shows the Kaiser’s yacht, SMS “Hohenzollern”.  CV $2.75.

The stamp was canceled at the Kieta post office, with a cancel in use between 1907 and 1914.  The catalogue value for a full strike of this cancel is 30 euros above the value of the underlying stamp.

The German New Guinea colony was the northern half of the nation now known as Papua New Guinea, and was colonised by Germany starting in 1884.  It included many of the islands off this coast of PNG.  The colony was invaded by UK and Australian forces during the opening months of the First World War and was conquered within a few weeks.  Germany never regained control of this or any of her colonies after the Treaty of Versailles ended the war.
