Item Description
The stamp in this listing is a stamp issued for use in the German Post Offices in China, listed in Scott as #1, and is part of the 1898 issue of the German Offices in China definitive series, which has the word “China” overprinted diagonally over an otherwise ordinary 1889 series German definitive. This stamp is on piece, with a military mail cancellation associated with the "Boxer Rebellion" of 1900-1901. This cancel reads "K.D. Feldpost Station / No. 1" This stands for "Imperial German Military Mail Station / No. 1" This was a temporary military post office located in Kaumi, which is in China's Shandong Province near the German colony of Kiautschou.
Although cancels of this type do not include a year, the cancel date of 10 May should only have been in 1901 based on the period of use of the cancel. While it was also used in May of 1902, it should be on a stamp of colonial Kiautschou in May 1902.
ARGE CV €40
This stamp and others like it were issued during a period of time when the major Western powers, e.g. the British, French, Japanese, Russians, Germans, and even the Americans, at one point or another extracted “concessions” from China in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This included operating postal services in cities, typically in the coastal areas. Officially, the reason for this was that the Western countries found the Chinese Imperial Post to be "unreliable"--but to be fair, the foreign PO's did provide effective international exchange of mail. (Chinese stamps were invalid for international mail until China joined the UPU in 1914.)
All the foreign PO's accepted mail for delivery anywhere in the world, even for addressees within China except for the US, which onlyhandled mail between China and the US. In most cases, the nations which operated such extra-territorial postal services used stamps of their home countries, both with and without distinctive overprints, and sometimes with surcharges in Chinese currency.
Germany Chinese post offices all closed once China declared war on Germany in March of 1917. All remaining foreign PO's in China would close in 1922, excepting those in official colonies (i.e. those in Macau, Hong Kong, etc.)
