Item Description
The stamp in this listing is a stamp issued for use in Germany proper, but with a cancel showing that it was actually used at the German Post Office in Shanghai, China. As such, it is a " Vorläufer", or a "Forerunner" of the German Offices in China issue. This one has a partial but identifiable cancel applied at the German PO in Shanghai, which at the time was located inside the German consulate. For those who are unfamiliar with this term, a Forerunner is a stamp of one country or postal entity which is used in another territory somewhere else before distinctive stamps for that territory were issued. Typically, this situation occurs in a colony or in the situation where a new country is created, but inherits an older country's postal system for a time.
One example include British stamps used in Gibraltar prior to 1886, when the first stamps inscribed "Gibraltar" were issued. Another would be US, Japanese, and German stamps used at post offices in what are now The Republic of Palau or the Federated States of Micronesia prior to c. 1986, when the first issues of those countries appeared.
Similar forerunners exist for most German colonies and Offices Abroad.
Michel CV€20 for the least expensive shade (roughly equal to US$24)
This stamp and others like it were issued during a period of time when the major Western powers, e.g. the British, French, Japanese, Russians, Germans, and even the Americans, at one point or another extracted “concessions” from China in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This included operating postal services in cities, typically in the coastal areas. Officially, the reason for this was that the Western countries found the Chinese Imperial Post to be "unreliable"--but to be fair, the foreign PO's did provide effective international exchange of mail. (Chinese stamps were invalid for international mail until China joined the UPU in 1914.)
All the foreign PO's accepted mail for delivery anywhere in the world, even for addressees within China except for the US, which onlyhandled mail between China and the US. In most cases, the nations which operated such extra-territorial postal services used stamps of their home countries, both with and without distinctive overprints, and sometimes with surcharges in Chinese currency.
Germany Chinese post offices all closed once China declared war on Germany in March of 1917. All remaining foreign PO's in China would close in 1922, excepting those in official colonies (i.e. those in Macau, Hong Kong, etc.)
