Item Description
Great Britain, Scott #399 (Stanley Gibbons #643), used(o), 1963, To Publicize the Red Cross Centenary Congress held in Geneva, Switzerland; in 1863, the Geneva Society for Public Welfare proposed the establishment of a neutral international organization for the care of the war wounded, based on the book "A Memory of Solferino" by Jean-Henri Dunant (1828-1910); Dunant was a Swiss businessman working in Italy, on the evening of June 24th, 1859, he came upon the battlefield after the Battle of Solferino between France and Austria; twenty-three thousand soldiers lay wounded, dying, and dead with no apparent attempt at medical care; Dunant organized the civilian population, especially women and girls, to provide assistance; using his own resources, he purchased needed materials and helped erect makeshift hospitals; he wrote about his experiences, "Un Souvenir de Solferino", which was widely circulated and became very influential; as a result, Dunant has been considered the founder of the Red Cross and was awarded the Novel Peace Prize in 1901; 1 shilling, 3 pence, photogravure printed, perforated: 14½x14, watermarked: multiple Saint Edward's crowns (Scott watermark #322, Stanley Gibbons watermark #179), red, blue, and gray, Scott 2022 catalog value: $1.90, slightly off-centered, half circular classic socked-on-the-nose border cancellation leaving main image largely clear, sound back, good perforations. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.40 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.60 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used. If not satisfied, return the stamp to me at your own expense, and I will refund the cost, but not my postage to you. If the stamp is not as described, I will refund the cost and reimburse you for postage both ways.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
