Item Description
Great Britain, Scott #991 (Stanley Gibbons #1187), used(o), 1982, Issue Honoring British Maritime Heritage, British Warships and their Captains through the Ages, stamp shows the Mary Rose and King Henry VIII, the Mary Rose, launched in 1511 and substantially rebuilt in 1536, was a carrack-type warship in the English Tudor navy of King Henry VIII, she served for 33 years in several wars against France, Scotland, and Brittany; she saw her last action at the Battle of the Solent against the French and was sunk on 19 July 1545; the ship was raised and museum-featured in 1985; King Henry VIII (1491-1547) was an enthusiastic shipbuilder, who took pride in his 'Army of the Sea' would see his fleet grow from five at the start of his reign to fifty-eight by the time of his death in 1547; while he may have had many ships, it is the Mary Rose that is remembered as his favorite; notably, the life of the Mary Rose coincides almost exactly with the reign of Henry VIII, 15½ pence, photogravure and engraved by Czeslaw Slania (1921-2005), Polish-born postage stamp and banknote engraver; one of the most skilled and prolific of all stamp engravers with over 1,000 stamps to his credit; his work was of such recognized quality and detail that he is one of the very few readily named engravers among stamp collectors, with some who specialize in collecting his work; perforated: 14½x14, phosphorus paper, no watermark, multicolored, Scott 2022 catalog value: 25¢, nicely centered, very faint, black-ink, single rimmed, quarter circular, socked-on-the-nose corner cancellation at the lower right and well clear of the main image, sound back, bent corner perforations at top left when viewed from the front, otherwise good perforations, centering and image clear cancel warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.55 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.68 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
