Stamp Information
Year of Issue: 1883–1884
Catalogue Reference: SG 178
Face Value: Two Shillings & Six Pence (2s6d)
Color: Lilac
Monarch: Queen Victoria
Postmark: Striking London Chief Office barred oval cancel, highly collectible
Historical Context
The 2s6d Lilac was part of the high-value “Lilac & Green” series, introduced to simplify postal and fiscal usage during Queen Victoria’s reign. High denominations such as this were commonly employed on overseas mail, large parcels, and revenue documents. The bold London Chief Office cancellation marks this stamp as one that passed through Britain’s central hub of postal activity, where vast volumes of domestic and international mail were processed daily.
Condition
Front: Strong lilac shade, well-centered impression. Bold London Chief Office barred oval cancel, very clear and complete across the design.
Reverse: Multiple hinge remnants, old pencil markings, and light adhesions typical of classic material.
Perforations: Intact with only minor roughness at edges.
A well-preserved, postally used high-value Victorian definitive with a desirable cancellation.
Collector’s Note
Stamps with London Chief Office cancels are especially sought after, as they confirm genuine postal use through the most important mail-processing center in the British Empire. This makes the piece both a strong single item and a desirable addition to a specialized collection of Queen Victoria high values.
