Item Description

A group of 17 mostly different stamps of Greece or Crete. There are two stamps which are CTO, 4 which are imperforate, and the remainder are mint. All stamps have been hinged, and many have hinge remnants remaining. There appear to be different perforation and color varieties, so the duplication may be less than it appears at first glance.

What I know about these isn't much, but here goes. In the late 1890s, the Island of Crete rebelled against the Ottomans, who ruled the Island, and became known as the Cretan State. Greece's Prince George served as High Commisioner from 1898 until 1906. Shortly afterwards, Crete formally became part of Greece. Prince George is shown on the Drachma values of these stamps, so I date these stamps to about 1900, give or take a few years.
