Item Description
In 1995 the Faroes Islands issued a pair of attractive stamps depicting the two subspecies of the common Raven that are only found on this Northern Atlantic group of islands.The North Atlantic Raven is a robust and loud native to the Faroes, probably evolved from individuals brought to the islands by the Vikings. The raven on the other 400 kronur stamp is a Pied Raven, a color morph of the North Atlantic subspecies and which was only found on the Faroe Islands.It has disappeared since the mid-20th century. It had large areas of white feathering, most frequently on the head, the wings and the belly and its beak was light brown.
Both these raven cousins are depicted in the cachet against a Faroes flag backdrop and are handcolored on a handmade threaded linen off-white envelope. The two new stamps received a nice strike of the official Faroes first day of issue cancellation of June 12, 1995. The Faroes combo stamps of a Puffin and a Guillemot are struck with the Tórshavn round dater of the same date, as The Faroes does not allow the First Day of Issue cancel to be used on older stamps!
The reverse shows this to be cover to be an Artist's Proof. Only 13 of these covers were sent to the Faroes for servicing, and this is the only one with the combo stamps affixed.
