Item Description
The item in this listing is a single used Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #52C, and issued in 1890. It is mint, hinged d than in mint; please see below.Scott CV $120.00
The history of the stamp is as follows:
The design of Scott #52C, a 5¢ stamp showing the portrait of King Kamehameha V, was first issued in 1866 to pay the Hawaiian portion of postage for letters sent to the United States. (At that time, a mixed franking of Hawaiian and US stamps would have been typically used.) The "blue" issue of 1866 and a second printing issued in 1867 (Scott #32) are a much darker and slightly greenish shade of blue than the 1882 issue in the same design, which is described in Scott as "ultra" (Scott #39).
Scott #52C was possibly printed as an attempt to recreate the darker shade of the earlier Scott #32 for sale to collectors. According to sources on the matter, it was issued in 1890 but had to have been printed no later than 1884. The differences between Scott #32 and #52C are thas follows: Scott #32 has a slightly greenish tinge to the blue ink it is printed in, and on about half of the examples, the paper appears blue as well. All examples of Scott #32 have traces of layout lines, called "framelines" in Scott, which are found at the corners of the stamp design.
Scott #52C is a deeper, almost blackish shade of blue described in Scott as "deep indigo." Scott #52C has no layout lines, and is uniformly printed on white paper.
Scott #52C was sold mostly at the philatelic desk at the Honolulu post office, and for this reason, was usually kept in mint condition by the collectors who purchased them.
Additionally, of the 62,500 examples of Scott #52C that were produced, 46,500 were eventually overprinted by the Provisional Hawaiian government in 1893--leaving just 16,000 examples issued without overprint.
