Item Description

The stamp in this listing is one example of Scott #57, a Hawaiian stamp issued in 1893. The overprint is slightly shifted up so that it appears across the face of the vignette (Queen Lili`uokalani).  It is supposed to be low enough so that the "1893" is a few mm above the bottom edge of the stamp, across the bottom third of it.  The stamp has a little dg, but this is not visible in a scan.  Scans of the back provided on request.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

Unoverprinted stamps of this design were first issued in brown in 1891 as Scott #52. This denomination was the primary domestic rate definitive between 1859 and the end of Hawaiian postal independence on 13 June 1900. The portrait shows Her Majesty Queen Lili`uokalani, the final monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Following the legally questionable overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom on January 17, 1893, the Hawaiian post office at first issued provisionally overprinted stamps. The overprinting was done to make the stamps more politically correct, as stamps of the Monarchy showed members of the royal family.

Scott #57 was created from stocks of Scott #52 that were on hand at the Honolulu post office at the time of the overthrow of the Monarchy. The overprinted version of this stamp was the primary domestic rate stamp until the issue of Scott #75 in 1894--but was sold until 1897, and is known used until 1900.
