Item Description
Punxsatawney Phil isn't the only native creature who can predict the weather! It is well-known in Ohio that the Woolybear Caterpillar's middle black band can foretell whether the coming winter will be mild or harsh according to its width!In 1973, Cleveland TV weatherman Dick Goddard (who my mom watched devotedly - I think she had a bit of a crush on him!) created the WoolyBear Festival, held annually now in Vermilion, OH on Lake Erie's shore, west of Cleveland. It features a parade, performances, arts & crafts booths, lots of food - and even a Woolybear Race! - and is attended by over 100,000 people, making it the biggest festival of its kind in Ohio!
My mom was living in Vermilion in 1994 (to get closer to Dick Goddard???) and I made this hand-drawn/hand-colored cachet just for her, and had it cancelled with the festival's pictorial cancel.
(by the way, the Woolybear's black band last Fall predicted a cold, snowy, and long-lasting second half of winter, which seems to be coming true for Northern Ohio!)
