Legend has it that Irish monk Saint Patrick - before he was a saint, back when he just liked to explore new lands in his little boat - made landfall ay a sheltered fjord in the west of Iceland, around the year 450! Whether true or not, Iceland named the village that sprung up in that fjord after the seafaring Irish man of God, and even today celebrates St. Patrick's Day. Not so much with leprechauns and shamrocks, but often with the dancing green Northern Lights still dazzling Icelandic nights in mid March.For several years I would send a handful of covers to Patreksfjörður for their March 17 postmark. Here is an example from 2001showing a properly-outfitted Puffin celebrating by spreading good cheer and shamrocks! The envelope is handmade from Irish Green stationery.
Two green-paletted stamps of the period frank the cover with its handcolored cachet. The reverse shows the Puffin cachets logo, and determines this as cover #1 of only 7 sent to Patreksfjörður for servicing!
