Item Description
Ireland (Éire), Scott #354 (Hibernian #D79), used(o), 1975, Fifth Definitive Series, Gerl Ancient Irish Artifacts, stamp shows an Stag from an ancient bowl, excavated at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk, England and held in the British Museum; the name of the series is from the surname of the designer, Heinrich Gerl of Munich, Germany, who won an international stamp design competition sponsored by the Irish Post Office in 1966; these were the stamps to replace one the world's longest running definitive series, the "Map of Ireland" and "Sword of Light" series, which had run since 1922; eleven artists submitted fifty seven designs; Gerl's designs were based on early Irish, English, and Welsh Celtic art, numerals only, no denomination indicator, no watermark, 9 pence, perforated: 15, photogravure printed, Scott (light blue green and black), Hibernian (turquoise green), Scott 2019 catalog value: 40¢. Off-centered, double strike cancels, both light, circular, black-inked, single-rimmed, socked-on-the-nose corner cancellation. the main quarter-to-half circular at the upper left corner, the second, quarter circular at the upper right corner, and both clear of the main image, sound back, good perforations; image clear cancel warrants a selling price premium, inventory listing code: MF.
