Item Description
ISÖ ISLAND Sweden 1969 Peace & Liberty issue Kennedy, Churchill, Hammarskjöld, Adenauer Local Post VF-NH.Full set Se-tenant in Strip of 4.Isö is a tiny island located in the Baltic Sea some 45 km from Norrköping on the East Coast of Sweden. Most of its stamps were probably printed in Britain by Clive Feigelbaum and not see any postal use and are considered as Fantasy stamps or Bogus. But three issues can be considered legitimate. In the late 1960s, the island's tenant, who lived on the mainland and operated a regular mail boat service to the island, contacted the Swedish Post Office to explore the possibility of operating a postal service between Isö and Vikbolandet. It appears that Post Office officials had no particular objections. In the summer of 1969, the first set of Isö stamps went on sale. They were printed by the F. Thiele firm of Hamburg in sheets of 20 (4 x 5) and are available in both perforated and imperforated versions. The stamps featured prominent figures: 50 öre Sir Winston Churchill, 75 öre John F. Kennedy, 1.25 öre Dag Hammarskjöld, and 2.50 Konrad Adenauer. The stamps simply bore the island's name and its denomination. In the lower margin, the inscription "Local mail from the island of Isö" appears in Swedish and English. The “Peace and Liberty” issue of 1969 remained in use for three years. In 1972, there was the famous “Girls of Sweden” set of four stamps. Once again a sheet of 20 stamps with the four denominations (1, 2, 3 and 4 kronor) printed in se-tenant format. The stamps showed photos of basically nude girls by Siwer Ohlsson. They were also overprinted for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, a series that was issued on July 29, 1972. Only these first three sets can therefore be considered legitimate. For years, philatelist Jakob von Uexkull, the originator of the first stamps, continued to market them from his home on the Isle of Man.The following stamps of Isö attracted considerable attention at the time. They were denounced as completely fake by the philatelic press of the time, despite the existence of a stamp service. The distributor of Isö stamps in the United Kingdom was Rushstamps of Lyndhurst (near Southampton), and in the United States, Don Palazzo of Foxboro, Massachusetts, known for also distributing counterfeit stamps of former Soviet territories produced after 1992. Fantasy stamps created by Feigenbaum were offered in mint condition, but also with a convenience cancellation printed at the same time as the stamps themselves.Pursuant to the guidelines for all sales of tangible goods, taxes will be collected and remitted to the appropriate tax authorities. Possible Customs charges, depending on the rules in force in the country of destination. All lots are guaranteed. If you consider that the lot is not as described, you can send it back for full refund (except certification and registration cost) within 30 days of purchase.
