1871-1877 US Private Die Proprietary Match & Medicine Scott #- RS284r 1 1/4 Cents Charles Fletcher New York City Used Paper Adhesion Rouletted 5 1/2In 1862, As Part Of Its Effort To Finance The Civil War, The U.S. Government Placed Taxes On Everyday Consumer Goods Including Matches, Proprietary Medicines, Playing Cards, And Perfumes, And Required Specially Engraved Stamps To Be Affixed To The Packaging As Proof Of Payment? These Are Now Referred To As ?Match And Medicine? Revenues. Because They Were Attached Directly To The Packages, The Majority Were Torn Apart Or Discarded When The Goods Were Opened, Leaving Only A Small Fraction Surviving, And Many Of Those Are Found With Tears, Creases, Or Missing Pieces. The Program Continued Until 1883 And Was Revived Briefly From 1898 To 1902 To Raise Funds For The Spanish-American War, Though By Then Far Fewer Manufacturers Participated. Today, These Stamps Are Prized By Collectors Not Only For Their Scarcity But Also For Their Intricate Designs, Vibrant Colors, And The Glimpse They Provide Into Nineteenth-Century American Industry And Commerce.Match And Medicine Revenue Stamps Are Grouped Into Four Distinct Paper Types That Also Correspond To Specific Periods Of Issue. Collectors Recognize These As Old Paper Used From 1862 Through 1871, Silk Paper Used From 1871 Through 1877, Pink Paper Produced In 1877 And 1878, And Watermarked Paper Introduced Beginning In 1878. Understanding These Paper Types Is Key To Proper Identification And Cataloging. Another Unique Aspect Of This Field Is How These Stamps Are Valued ? Even Examples With Minor Flaws Often Sell For A High Percentage Of Their Catalog Price Because Of Their Scarcity, While Fault-Free Examples In Very Fine Or Better Condition Can Command Multiples Of Their Listed Value Due To Strong Collector Demand. We're Happy To Combine Shipping On Multiple Orders To Help You Save! Most Of The Poster Stamps And Cinderellas I Offer Are Truly Old Historic Treasures! Many Are Close To 100 Years Old Or More. Because Of Their Age, You Might Notice A Few Minor Imperfections Here And There. They're Full Of History And Character, But They Most Definitely Aren't Post Office Fresh. That's Especially True For Cinderella And Poster Stamps, So Please Take A Good Look At The Scans Because They're An Important Part Of The Description. Also, Please Note That The Backs Of Poster Stamps Are Typically Considered Much Less Important Than The Fronts, And Descriptions Can Be A Bit Subjective. If The Condition Of The Back Is Important To You, Just Reach Out. I Am Happy To Provide More Details Or Additional Scans.I Do My Best To Describe Everything Honestly And Accurately, And To The Best Of My Ability, I Guarantee That All Items Are Genuine (Unless Otherwise Noted).
