Item Description

.  New Hebrides 1929 Tourville parcel piece to New Caledonia with SG 40-42 & SG 43 all cancelled with the rare "PAR AVION" hand stamp, and tied to front with "PORT VILLA" postmark dated "16 JL '26". In 1929 there was an abortive attempt at an inaugural airmail service. The French cruiser "Tourville" was visiting the South Pacific & was to use its seaplane to collect & deliver mail between island groups. The Condominium Postmaster therefore had a "PAR AVION" hand stamp prepared, which was applied to all stamps after they had been affixed to the Tourville mail & before cancelling the stamps with a Vila postmark. There were reported to be 800 items of mail (though most have been lost). Unfortunately the seaplane broke-down & instead the mail shipped to New Caledonia. Stamps with the "PAR AVION" hand stamp are scarce. This is the only example that has been seen to have SG 40-42 with the "PAR AVION" hand stamp & is exceedingly rare.
