Item Description

This event cover, commemorating the Golden Jubilee of "the World's first distinctive air mail stamp, flown by pigeon from Okupu, Great Barrier Island, on the 19th November, 1898" was flown from the Great Barrier Island to Auckland on November 19, 1948 franked by the Children's Health Semi Postal Set of 1948, Scott B32-B33, each tied by a black cds.

The cachet depicts a map of Great Barrier Island, a pigeon carrying a letter showing the one-shilling stamp, and Auckland and is printed with : "Issued by the Auckland Philatelic Society, Inc."

Verso of the envelope was printed with historical background which was covered over by a pasted-on corrected piece.

Enclosure is a printed card, one side with the history of the Pigeon Post, the other with info on the 'Observer Printing Works Limited."

The backflap is un-sealed and intact. No backstamps.
